As husbands we have a large responsibility. We are to lead our families. So many of us have lost sight of what this truly means. So often men go one of two ways. They choose to be a dominating presence, and rule their family with an iron fist, demanding submission. Or they become footstools for their families, allowing anything to happen without concern for the responsibility that God has placed on us. It's becoming harder to recognize the falacies of this in today's society. But one quick look at how we were intended to be, clears the confusion up quite well.
To set up a good starting point, we are placed as the head of our families by God! We are to lead them! Not to follow the musings of our wives and kids, but the teaching of the truth by God's Word! It says in Ephesians 5:22-24," Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, as also Christ is the head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything." NKJV This outlines that we as men are to step up and take charge of our families.
Hopefully we all know that we are to emulate Jesus' life as displayed in scriptures such as 1 Peter 2:21," For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps:", or Ephesians 5:1-2," Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us and given Himself for us, an offering and a sacrifice to God as a sweet-smelling aroma." The list goes on. This tells us how we are to step up and take charge.
But so often we forget what that really means for us husbands. If we are to be the head of our families as Jesus is the head of the church, we should look to the way He leads the church. Matthew 20:28 states," just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as ransom for many." We are to serve our families... Take a look at 1 Corinthians 13. It will give you a good idea of what love looks like. In Ephesians 5:25, we see why that matters," Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,"
All of these things coupled together gives us a picture of how our marriages should be running. Women should be submitting to their husbands' God given position. Men should be leading through SERVITUDE to our families. This is key to leading our families as Christ leads the church. To serve takes the greatest amount of humility, not arrogance or pride. We are to be the last in order to be the first. " So the last will be first, and the first last..." Matt 20:16. Just remember, families, this service also comes with great responsibility and authority, placed there by God's design; not to be undermined or usurped.
