When did the idea of a real man become an unemotional, dis-compassionate, self-aware prick? Why as a man do I have to care more about my "bros" than I do my wife? Or care more about a football game than I do my kids? Does this seem to you like a natural course of action, or an escape from responsibility? Seems to me that men today are more concerned with nurturing their pride than they are their loved ones.
Ask any honest, non-feminist woman (emphasis on the honest), what she wants from a man. You will notice that some of the most important traits include; caring, gentle, willing to listen, understanding. How can you do this if you are self-absorbed? To embody these traits does not mean that you become a footstool or a doormat. You can care about people and still be tough. You can be sensitive and still be brave. You can be gentle and still be able to fight.
Its not that a man has to embrace and enact these characteristics 100% of the time. But that we are able to revert to them when they are needed. We can go to war, turn off our emotions in order to fight the good fight, then come home and hold our family close with love. That is a real man...
